Preparations are underway for the 2025 Saiko Ice Festival, set to begin on February 1st at the Wild Bird Forest Park in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture.
Crafting Massive Ice Sculptures
Local organizers are carefully creating impressive ice sculptures using a unique technique:
- Wooden frames have been constructed as the base for the sculptures
- Water has been sprayed onto these frames since late December
- The sculptures will feature Mount Fuji and other local mountain landscapes
- A special sculpture of a snake (representing the Chinese zodiac year) is also being prepared
Perfect Conditions for Ice Art
The festival requires specific weather conditions to create these massive ice sculptures:
- Ideal temperatures must be below -5°C (23°F)
- This year’s cold winter forecast is promising for sculpture creation
- Watanabe Yasuji, the Tourism Association President, is optimistic about the ice formation process
