Fujiyoshida City, in partnership with Fuji Kyuko and Fuji Kyuko Bus, is launching a free self-driving electric bus service starting January 31. This pilot program aims to test the effectiveness of autonomous vehicles in urban areas, with plans for full implementation next year.
The electric bus will run on a 7-kilometer circular route called the “Fuji-michi Loop Route,” connecting Honcho-dori and Showa-dori streets. The service will operate six times daily between 10:00 AM and 4:05 PM, with each loop taking about 35 minutes. Passengers can get on and off at any of the 19 designated stops along the route.
The bus features:
- Maximum speed of 35 kilometers per hour
- Capacity for 13 passengers
- Electric-powered system for eco-friendly operation
While the bus operates in self-driving mode (Level 2 automation), a trained operator will always be present in the driver’s seat to monitor the system and switch to manual control when necessary. This safety measure ensures smooth operation in various traffic conditions.
Important Information for Passengers:
- The service is available until February 28
- Advance reservations are recommended
- Local residents need to register for a city membership
- Tourists are welcome to use the service
- The entire service is free of charge

This project is fully funded by the national government, with the bus costing 80 million yen. The local committee has been conducting test runs since January 15 to collect necessary data for the service.
